Negotiating is tricky. Here are some tips to get the salary you need.
1. Don't
The best advice for negotiating is don't do it. Get a professional to do it instead. If you are counting on a blog post you found on Google to go toe-to-toe with an HR director of 15 years, you might be punching out of your weight class. The experts at Mesa Recruits have the experience and aggression to get you where you need to be--without creating an awkward confrontation with a potential employer.
2. Wait
The further you are in a hiring process, the more your potential employer has showed their hand. If they have interviewed you five times and flown you across the country, they are interested--and you hold all the cards.
3. Remember you are special
It might not feel like it, but you are special. Your potential employer has been scouring the nation for someone who fits their needs perfectly. Any initial salary range is a starting point targeted at the average candidate. As someone who crushed the interview and proved you're exactly what they need, never be scared to tell them what YOU need to make this deal work for you.
4. Get creative
Your employer wants to make this work as much as you do, but they might have budget limitations. If you want a special schedule, or to work remote, or a promise of promotion in 3 years, say so. Often times, the perfect company might not be able to afford you from a pure salary perspective. That said, a comprehensive benefit package and some time to spend with your kids might just make all the difference.
5. Walk away
Sometimes, it's just not the right job.
